Whether you are a local to the area or visiting for a holiday, we've listed our top spots in Rotorua for paddleboarding:
Lake Rotorua to Lake Rotoiti via the Ohau Channel
While most paddlers stay clear of Lake Rotorua due to its busy nature, you can find this secluded beach close to Okere Falls and the Ramada Resort just off Hwy 33. It's best if you can run a shuttle and drop a car off at the boat ramp on Lake Rotoiti as the winds are usually blowing down the channel. The river that connects the two lakes is a gentle, meandering stream that is great for bird watching. With a gentle flow, you can relax and take in the surroundings.
Lake Tarawera's hot water beach
Lake Tarawera is a beautiful lake a short drive from Rotorua itself and its lack of road access makes it feel more remote and wilderness. It's the perfect place to explore by paddleboard where you can indulge in its pristine white beaches and blue water. A highlight on the lake is 'Hot Water Beach', which is sheltered in a nook at the southwesterly end - It is pretty easy to find, just look for the steam.
Lake Rotoiti
Lake Rotoiti has an abundance of bird life and an abundance of isolated beaches and coves, many of which are only accessible by small craft. It is surrounded by native bush and shoreline cliffs, making it an absolute paradise for paddlers looking to find a slice of relaxation away from the crowds. Another sweet treat to Lake Rotoiti is the paddle-in glow worm cave, only reachable by either paddling or swimming!
Lake Rotoiti Hotpools
With eight mineral hot pools on the edge of Lake Rotoiti, these unique baths offer a variety of temperatures amongst the native bush. The only way to access the Lake Rotoiti hot pools is by water or air, making these pools such a treat to visit by paddleboard. There's also an area to have a BBQ and a fully licensed cafe on site, making it a great place to go with kids to spend the day, or at sunset for date night.
Lake Tikitapu (Blue Lake)
The Blue lake is a favorite among locals and has become popular for swimming, fishing, and a variety of watersports, including paddle boarding. It has a circular walking track around the lake for friends who don't like getting their feet wet and has excellent BBQ and picnic areas. Make sure you check out the AirStream Cafe for a coffee and cake after your paddle.
